The Balancing Act: Tips on Returning to Work After Parental Leave

Congratulations! You have just taken on a new and exciting full-time role – becoming a parent! I remember that feeling so well – overwhelming joy mixed with “what now?” Becoming a parent is a full-time job in itself, and when you start thinking about returning to your other full-time job, things can get even more complicated.

One of the biggest transitions many new parents face is returning to the workforce after parental leave. This blog is here to offer support, practical tips, and relatable experiences to help you navigate this significant chapter.

So, where do you begin? Let’s break down the key areas to consider when preparing for your return to work:

1. Childcare: The Foundation of Your Return

Securing reliable and affordable childcare is often the biggest challenge for returning to work. It’s not as simple as just finding someone to watch your child; it’s about finding someone you trust and who aligns with your parenting values.

Explore your options! Tour and set up interview with daycare centers or in-home nannies. Or find someone in your circle who is able and willing to help! Consider the pros and cons of each option and consider what best suits your family’s needs and budget.

2. Time Management: Mastering the Art of Two Full-Time Roles

Suddenly, you have a tiny human who depends on you around the clock. Time management becomes a key part of success as you try to balance work, family, and your personal needs.

  • Prioritize and plan: Identify your must-dos and use a calendar to schedule everything, from work meetings to family time to even a little ‘me time.’
  • Prepare to be flexible: Not everything will go according to plan, especially with a little one. Be prepared to adapt.
  • Ask for help: Don’t shy away from asking for help from friends or family. You don’t have to do it alone.

3. Workplace Communication: Setting Yourself Up for Success

Open and honest communication with your manager will always take you a long way. Be clear about your needs before your re-entry. Communicate your needs and expectations clearly, whether they relate to childcare, work-life balance, or professional development. It’s helpful to know what flexibility you have available, especially when unexpected situations arise.

4. Reigniting Your Career

This stage of life can be the perfect time to reignite your career and pursue new opportunities for growth and development. Take some time to reflect on what you truly want from your career. What are your passions? What are your strengths? Use this as an opportunity to align your career with your values and create a path that’s both fulfilling and sustainable.

Perhaps you’ve identified skills you’d like to develop or areas where you want to grow. Now is the time to invest in yourself. Explore online courses, attend workshops, seek out mentorship opportunities, or even consider going back to school! Even small steps can make a big difference in the long run, for both you and your family.

This journey of balancing parenthood and career is a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace this new identity shift, with all its complexities and unexpected turns. Acknowledge your resilience – you are juggling so much! And know that you are doing it all for you and your family, building a future where everyone can thrive. Remember, you’ve got this!
